Melissa Sheldrick has been working as the Patient and Family Advisor & Acting Director, Consumer Reporting and Learning program at the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada (ISMP Canada) since 2019. She is a trained educator and has been working with families for more than 25 years. She began advocating for improved safety after the loss of her 8-year-old son, Andrew, from preventable medication errors made in community pharmacy in 2016. Since that time, Melissa has been working with health care professionals and organizations, regulators, and patients and caregivers to advance continuous quality improvement programs in community pharmacy and other settings. To transition from education to health care safety and improvement, Melissa completed a certificate program from Harvard Medical School in Safety, Quality, Informatics and Leadership (SQIL). She is an active member of Patients for Patient Safety Canada and continues to advocate for patient safety through quality improvement initiatives, across Canada and internationally.
