(Continuing) Education within QI: Extending the use and impact of education theory, evidence, and expertise in QI
Date and time
Tuesday, Oct 21, 2025Â (12-1 p.m. ET)
Session Description:Â
The Hierarchy of Effectiveness Framework, often used in quality improvement (QI), situates ‘education and training’ at the bottom of the list of potential improvement interventions. Education is frequently referred to as a ‘necessary but insufficient’ component of a multifaceted QI initiative or a relatively weak intervention when trying to enact system change. However, this perspective of education might reflect, or contribute to, limited efforts to maximize the use of education theory and evidence, and education experts, in QI initiatives. In this presentation, we will share findings from a scoping review of education in quality improvement, as well as empirical cases from the Kaiser Permanente Colorado health system to extend understandings about the intersections between education and QI, how education can be more purposefully used in the pursuit of system changes, and the potential for collaborations across the silos of (continuing) education and QI.
