Advancing Healthcare Improvement:
Equity, Innovation, Community and the future of QIPS

The Annual CQuIPS Symposium on November 19th, 2024 brought together a vibrant community of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) professionals, fostering collaboration and sharing inspiring ideas in healthcare improvement. The event featured thought-provoking plenary sessions, dynamic workshops, innovative posters, and ample opportunities to network with leaders and peers in the QIPS field.

The day opened with a powerful plenary, “Diffusing Power and Building Trust: Elevating Equity in Improvement Science” with Dr. Lisa Richardson and Dr. Karey Sutton, moderated by Dr. Kelly Smith. This talk underscored the importance of embedding equity into the very fabric of improvement science and was paired with discussions that explored actionable strategies for building trust within diverse communities and ensuring inclusive practices across healthcare systems.

The morning agenda provided the community with a selection of topics that included themes such as broadening the understanding of harm, which emphasized the need to view patient harm beyond the physical, delving into emotional, psychological, and cultural dimensions to enhance safety and learning; tackling healthcare inequities, which introduced a novel framework to address disparities at every stage of quality improvement initiatives, equipping participants with practical strategies; and a talk focused on building an innovation mindset, encouraging healthcare professionals to adopt design and systems thinking to navigate the complexities of post-pandemic transformation. Additionally, a session with 4 groups of abstract posters presenters who shared their inspiring projects rounded off the morning.

The afternoon sessions offered insight into relevant issues in QIPS. In the Hot Topics in Quality and Safety session, moderators explored the latest research and concepts shaping the field over the past year, sparking engaging discussions. Additionally, key topics were explored such as research methodologies, that highlight the interplay between qualitative and quantitative approaches, providing actionable insights through real-world case studies; addressing the environmental impact of healthcare; and issues of burnout and disconnection, working through strategies to strengthen workplace engagement and foster meaningful connections among healthcare professionals.

The Symposium concluded with Dr. Muhammad Mamdani’s compelling session on “Applied Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare.” Drawing on Unity Health Toronto’s success in deploying machine-learned solutions, Dr. Mamdani highlighted the transformative potential of AI in clinical practice and QI, as well as the challenges of implementation.

Beyond the sessions, the Symposium offered robust networking opportunities, fostering connections among QIPS practitioners, researchers, and organizational leaders. Informal discussions during coffee breaks and poster presentations facilitated collaboration and the sharing of insights. To conclude the day, an award was given to the top poster presentation:  STOP the POP: Reducing postoperative pneumonia (POP) in General Surgery, a quality improvement project.

The 2024 CQuIPS Symposium has continued to connect the community while sharing knowledge in quality and safety in healthcare. From equity and innovation to sustainability and AI, the symposium equipped participants with the tools and inspiration to drive meaningful change in the healthcare landscape.
