About Us
The Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQuIPS) is a joint partnership between the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine and three of its major teaching hospitals, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the Hospital for Sick Children (‘SickKids’) and Women’s College Hospital. The University constituted CQuIPS as an extra-departmental unit (‘EDU’), defined as a flexible, multidisciplinary entity organized around emerging areas of research and teaching that span traditional disciplines.
CQUIPS+
CQUIPS+ is part conference, part community building, part inspiration hub.
Designed for quality improvement and patient safety professionals, researchers and learners, CQUIPS+ provides opportunities for sharing, learning and collaborating.
Education
Our award-winning programs create a pipeline of future QIPS professionals and leaders both within and beyond Toronto. Our internationally-recognized faculty include clinicians and experts in the field of QIPS who have a track record of executing successful initiatives in both academic and institutional settings. Our alumni become members of the CQuIPS community, with many supporting CQuIPS programs and activities.
Our Research
The impact of our research can be demonstrated in the many publications produced by our staff and core members, including in high impact journals such as JAMA, Academic Medicine and BMJ Quality and Safety, covering a wide range of QIPS topics.
Organizational QI Capacity Building
Our team provides a unique service to healthcare organizations, including acute care hospitals, rehabilitation centres and ambulatory clinics. Our experts deliver QI training in an engaging and relevant format to clinical and non-clinical staff, with the aim of developing organizational capacity to successfully implement QI solutions.

Our Strategic Plan
QIPS innovations must both improve outcomes and reduce inequities, which is why the themes of health equity and health system resilience are at the heart of our activities. This thematic focus is consistent with our founding rationale — to help meet urgent needs within our health system. Our 2020-24 strategic plan outlined three key goals that are embedded in all of our activities: deliver exceptional value, advance the field and grow our community.
